Housewarming Gifts with a Little Hometown Heart for Charleston Closings and Beyond

Pictured: the living room in my first home after an extensive DIY renovation.
There is something so exciting about handing over the keys to a new home. Even if the boxes are stacked in the hallway and nobody can remember which box has the coffee mugs, it is a fresh start. I love a housewarming gift that acknowledges that moment without giving the new homeowner one more thing to find a place for.
I was born and raised in Charleston, and our little design studio is just across the bridge in Mount Pleasant. So when I think about a closing gift, my mind naturally goes to the places that make this area feel like home: Rainbow Row, the Pineapple Fountain, the Ravenel Bridge, and those beautiful marsh views that never get old. But the same idea works in Savannah, Greenville, Charlotte, New Orleans, and all the other places people are proud to call theirs.

A mug & tea towel go together perfectly with this sweet presentation.
For the realtor who wants a closing gift that feels personal
Realtors, I know you've got enough going on during closing week. You've been coordinating inspections, keeping everyone on the same page, and trying to make sure the keys actually show up on time. A thoughtful gift shouldn't become another complicated task on your list.
My favorite formula is simple: one useful piece for the house, one small keepsake, and a handwritten note. For Charleston clients, start with our Charleston Landmarks Tea Towel. It's cheerful, easy to tuck into a gift basket, and genuinely useful. You can wrap it around a loaf of local bread or tie it with ribbon and a wooden spoon. No elaborate basket assembly required.
If the buyer is moving to Charleston for the first time, add a Charleston Map Mug. I can think of few things more welcome when unpacking than a mug that immediately feels like it belongs in the new kitchen. For somebody who has lived here forever and is simply moving across town, a new piece with a familiar landmark can be surprisingly sweet, too. Pair it with some local coffee or even tea for the perfect gift.

An ornament for the first Christmas in the house
Our Charleston ornaments make especially lovely closing gifts because many can be personalized. A Rainbow Row ornament can remind someone of a downtown condo. The Ravenel Bridge might be perfect for a couple settling in Mount Pleasant. A Waterfront Park ornament suits the family that fell in love with Charleston on a visit years before finally moving here. Bonus - it's also a very popular spot for engagements!
You don't have to know the recipient's exact decorating style to choose a keepsake ornament. If the closing is in February, tuck it away with a little note about their first Christmas in the new house. That kind of detail feels thoughtful in any season.
And for the dog people? Oh, absolutely include the dog. Our personalized pet ornaments come in a number of breeds, so a Golden Retriever or Black Lab family can have a little something for the four-legged homeowner, too. Sometimes the dog is the one most excited about the new backyard.
A note goes a long way
I own a stationery business, so you probably saw this coming: please write a card. I would take a short, heartfelt note over an expensive generic gift any day. Something as simple as, "I hope this house is the setting for so many happy memories. Thank you for letting me be part of the journey," is plenty.
Our Charleston stationery includes local illustrations, notepads, and cards if you want to keep the whole gift tied to the city. If you close several homes a month, keeping a few tea towels, ornaments, and greeting cards on hand can save a last-minute shopping trip.
This works beyond Charleston, too
One of my favorite things about drawing Southern cities is realizing how attached people are to their own little corners of the world. Someone buying in Savannah might love a Forsyth Park Fountain ornament. A Greenville move deserves a Greenville tea towel or local ornament. We also carry pieces inspired by Charlotte, New Orleans, and Athens, Georgia. Browse our city gifts and choose the place that tells their story.
The gift doesn't need to be huge, and it certainly doesn't need a realtor's logo printed across the front. A new homeowner will remember who helped them get the keys. Give them something they'll enjoy once the moving boxes are gone.
